THE APHRODITE
PROJECT is a project about the passion of living creatively, joyously,
and energetically despite the existence of either internal or external
chaos. Named after the Greek goddess, Aphrodite, the project, like
the goddess, is meant to inspire passion by the involvement in a
creative art project.
The project involves individuals with "life-changing illness",
named "creators" who are matched with "artists"
in order to create a collaborative piece of art. The definition
of art is all- inclusive, and includes any of the visual arts, performing
arts, music, or writing. In addition to the individualized experience
that each "creator" has with their "artist"
in the creation of their art, they are also a part of the larger
group of fellow "creators", women and men, who also experience
the journey that a diagnosis of cancer demands.
THE APHRODITE
PROJECT 2003 and 2005 has now been completed. Beginning with eight
"creators" and ten "artists" in 2003, THE APHRODITE
PROJECT 2005 provided magic to eighteen "creators" and
18 "artists" who experienced the healing energy of creative
collaboration. THE APHRODITE PROJECT 2005 brought additional mediums
to those used in 2003 which included dance, assemblage, poetry and
sculture. In 2005, we were also fortunate to have the loving support
of the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara as a co-sponsor, represented
by Christine Pickett, MS, RD, Wellness Manager.
There are endless implications of this project, both for the individuals
involved, their families and friends, and for the community at large.
Of great importance to each of THE APHRODITE PROJECT's participants
is that their voices and their stories be heard in order to enhance
understanding of what it is like to live with cancer. Look closely
at their artwork, listen deeply to their music, and talk to them
with an attentive ear. Their wisdom is profound.
